The Chronological History of the Irving High School Band Directors

Mr. Kelton – (1938-39)
The first Irving high school band was organized by a Mr. Kelton of Dallas. It was not part of the curriculum program for that year.
Charles E. Flanagan – (1939-40, 1940-41)
Band became an integral part of the high school program that school year with Mr. Charles E. Flanagan as band director. There were 18 members in the Tiger Band. Mr. Flanagan also taught Chemistry. Mr. Flanagan joined the U.S. Armed Forces at the end of the 1940-1941 school year.
Mr. W.D. Gross – (1941-42, 1942-43, 1943-44, 1944-45, 1945-46)
replaced Mr. Flanagan at the end of the 1940-41 school year.  Mr. Gross wrote the words to the Irving High School Alma Mater, “Hail to thee, our Irving High School”. The music was taken from the Cornell University Alma Mater in Ithaca, New York.

Hal Gibson – (1948-49, 1949-50, 1950-51, 1951-52, 1952-53, 1953-54)
Karl Hudgins – (1954-55, 1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1959-60)
Lloyd Cook – Jim Herrington – (1960-61, 1961-62)
IHS O’Connor Rd. opens and band program expands under the direction of Lloyd Cook and Jim Herrington.
Eldon Janzen – Jim Herrington – (1962-63, 1963-64)
Mr. Herrington left to open MacArthur HS Band for the 1964-65 school year.

    To uphold the Dignity, Honor and Pride of the Irving High School Tiger Band by preserving its unique history, strengthening friendships, and above all else, ensuring a tradition of musical excellence for future generations.

  • Vision

    • Raising funds for scholarships and other means of assisting students who are financially in need, musically talented, and demonstrate dignity, honor and pride in their academic and community endeavors. 
    • Recruiting recent Tiger Band graduates, along with former students from all generations, to continually infuse the organization with new members and subsequently new ideas. 
    • Developing and maintaining an accurate, historic, annual record of the Irving High School Tiger Band, from its formation in 1938 through the current year, as an ongoing, perpetual legacy for future classes and generations.
